Scripture Is Contextual

There’s a scripture in Psalm 127:2 GNT that says, “it is useless to work so hard for a living, getting up early and going to bed late. For The Lord provides for those He loves while they are asleep“.

Then another one in Proverbs 24:33-34 GNT that says, “go ahead and take a nap; go ahead and sleep. Fold your hands and rest a while, but while you’re asleep, poverty will attack you like an armed robber.”

And this can leave you wondering whether to sleep or not, or to work or not when you compare the two exclusively. There are many scriptures like these in the Bible that seem countering with the thoughts they present, leaving you to wonder which to apply. But just like the ones above, the application is always contextual. For instance, the scriptures above speak to overworking yourself vs being lazy. It’s contextual.

In the same way, the lessons we learn in life are also very contextual. We say “Nothing always goes according to plan”, for instance. Yet, we also know the importance of planning, especially in the area of finances, child birth, business, etc. Someone could misapply one or the other without context.

I briefly considered other parts of Scripture like the ones above, that present differently across different situations, and it occurred to me that every scripture is not for everyone at every time. There would be certain scriptures that speak to us at certain seasons and times in our lives.

The same goes for personalities, stories and experiences as shown in the Bible. There might be seasons when you relate with Elijah’s journey and another season you relate with Joseph’s or Abraham’s. It could even be that a personality in the Bible resonates deeply with you and your stories seem alike.

The important thing to remember is that through the stories, events, lessons and prophecies in Scripture, God’s wisdom and perspective on life’s affairs have been revealed.

It’s also important to be conscious of the fact that God is the God of Everything we’ll ever need in life. In the season where you need Justice, He is the God of Justice. And when you need Mercy, He is Mercy. In the same way, He is Truth, Light, Wisdom, Peace, Joy, Love, Strength, Courage, etc. And the scriptures that reveal His Goodness, Perspective, and Personality within any of these that you need per time is what you should focus on.

Scriptures will always be contextual and relevant to you based on the season and journey you’re in and on.

Hope this helped in some way?

Cheers guys!
